Droopy Eyebrows and Brow Lift Surgery

What Are Droopy Eyebrows?

As we age, the skin and tissues around the forehead and brows can weaken and loosen. This can cause the eyebrows to sag, a condition called brow ptosis.

  • Droopy eyebrows may make you look tired, sad, or angry.
  • In some cases, sagging brows can push down on the eyelids and block side vision.
  • Aging and genetics are the main causes.

What Is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift is a surgery that raises the position of the eyebrows and smooths the forehead.

Benefits include:

  • Making the eyes look more open and refreshed
  • Reducing a tired or stern appearance
  • Improving side vision if the brows are blocking it

Sometimes, a brow lift is combined with upper eyelid surgery for a more complete result. For mild drooping, botulinum toxin (Botox) may help without surgery.

Types of Brow Lifts

There are different surgical options depending on how much the brows have drooped and your facial structure:

  • Internal Brow Lift – done through an eyelid incision, best for mild drooping
  • Direct Brow Lift – incision just above the brow, effective for severe drooping but may leave a visible scar
  • Endoscopic Brow Lift – small incisions behind the hairline with a camera; minimal scarring, quicker recovery
  • Trichophytic Brow Lift – incision at the front hairline; can also shorten a long forehead
  • Coronal Brow Lift – long incision behind the hairline; scars are hidden but the lift may not last as long

Recovery After Surgery

  • Cold compresses help reduce swelling and bruising in the first few days
  • Keep your head elevated and avoid heavy activity
  • Pain is usually mild and controlled with common pain medicine
  • Most people return to normal activities within 1–2 weeks

Risks and Considerations

Brow lift surgery is generally safe, but risks may include:

  • Temporary bruising or swelling
  • Bleeding or infection (rare)
  • Scarring or hair thinning near the incision
  • Temporary numbness in the scalp
  • Uneven brow height or need for a touch-up later

Summary

Droopy eyebrows can make you look older and more tired, and sometimes affect vision. A brow lift is a safe and effective way to restore a more youthful, refreshed look and improve comfort. Your oculoplastic surgeon will recommend the best approach for your needs.
